The jet lag still affecting her, Mia had woken up at an ungodly hour and lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Things with Toven weren't getting any better, and she was starting to give up hope.

Last night, after they'd returned from touring the city and eating dinner in a fancy restaurant, Toven had been the perfect gentleman again.

He'd kissed her goodnight on the cheek, headed to his room, and closed the door behind him. There had been none of the flirting, none of the humor and banter that they had enjoyed together before, and she didn't know what to make of it.

To be fair, she'd kept yawning on the way back from the restaurant and could barely keep her eyes open, but they could have spent a few private moments sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea, looking at the lake and chatting about whatever.

Was it her imagination that Toven preferred not to be alone with her?

They had spent every moment with her grandparents, and she was starting to think that he'd invited them not to support her but to shield him from her.

Toven was spending a fortune on her, and except for the few hours she'd been in the clinic, they had been spending all of their time together. But instead of becoming closer, they were steadily drifting apart. Toven was still friendly and courteous, but last night at the restaurant he'd spent more time chatting with her grandfather than talking to her.

Ugh. Men were so confusing.

Well, to be frank, she was confusing as well. On the one hand, Mia was grateful to Toven for not pressing the issue of sharing her bed. But on the other hand, she wanted him to insist and convince her that she should.

He could have offered to spend the night with her without getting under the blanket. He'd said that he wasn't sensitive to cold. Or he could have brought a blanket from his room.

But was it fair to expect that from him?

Toven had said that it was difficult for him to hold back, and she believed him. Maybe that was the problem? Or maybe he was acting distant out of respect for her grandparents?

Mia wished that was the reason, but she knew it wasn't.

And where had he gone while she was being tested? She'd hoped to see him between one test and the next, perhaps grab a cup of coffee or tea together, but he'd been gone the entire time, and when she'd asked him about it, he'd told her some bogus story about going to the bank to check on his accounts and then visiting the hospital and checking out the cardiology department to see how Doctor Cherengazzi's patients were doing.

Letting out a sigh, Mia sat up in bed, reached for the wheelchair that she'd left parked in front of the nightstand, and heaved herself over.

It was just more of her bad luck. She'd known that Toven was too good to be true.

Half an hour later, Mia was ready to step out of the room and face the world, or rather Toven, but he wasn't there.
